Little Miss Independent

Kev and I have laid in bed every night for the past week talking about how different Rowan is all the sudden. I feel like she woke up last week and was no longer a baby. We’ve seen her becoming more and more independant over the last few months, but this week has been above and beyond. I almost don’t even know what to do with it all. As there has been a steady climb in independence, there has also been a steady decline in wanting to listen or follow directions. She is little miss attitude all the sudden with this new found “I can do all this stuff on my own now.” We trying very hard to find that delicate balance of structure and discipline but also giving her some freedom to stretch her wings a little bit.

She came home from her time away at Grammy’s and all the sudden could climb out of her crib?!?!? It was a little crazy the first morning waking up to her standing right next to our bed. She gets so proud of herself. Time for a big girl bed I guess! You know that moment as a parent when you are encouraging your kid to something you know you shouldn’t, but you can’t help it because it is so dang cute? haha. That is Kev and I all the time…

Rowan has decided she no longer needs to sit in a highchair. She eats all her meals at her table and chairs now. Except she always wants someone to sit with her. I eat most of my meals a foot off the ground as well. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jenloveskev/7486423876/

We have started the whole potty training thing (slowly), but we are trying to only wear underwear when we are at home. We keep the potty in the middle of the living room and remind her like every 5 mins that it is there. She has gone quite a few times in the potty. She has also gone quite a few times all over the floor. I know this one will be a journey…http://www.flickr.com/photos/jenloveskev/7486424424/

Rowan has also started knowing exactly what she does and does not want to wear. Most days it is still mommy’s choice (forced or not), but with a Saturday morning at home this weekend we let her be the one who decided. Yep, its 90 degrees out and she was dead set on wearing her winter hat out. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jenloveskev/7486425882/

I am always so amazed with what each stage brings. This stage has been a joy to watch so far (of course with a little stress on the side) but watching Rowan growing up and doing things on her own makes us pretty proud. What a good, sweet, spirited little girl she is becoming.

p.s. Just wanted to say a big huge THANK YOU for all the sweet comments, emails and tweets last week about my post. The readers of this blog are by far the most amazing group of ladies ever. You have warmed me heart. It really means the world. Thank you.

  1. That video had me cracking up !! They’re so smart aren’t they? I’d heard kids learnt how to do those things, but luckily my daughter never discovered that trick ๐Ÿ˜‰ you guys all sound so happy in that video, it’s really warming.

Oh and I eat ALL my dinners a foot off the ground too, and I wouldn’t have it any other way ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. it is so wonderful seeing each new stage of our little one’s lives. although it can be hard saying goodbye to leg rolls and open-mouthed sloppy kisses…each new stage brings so much joy and more fun opportunities. my little girl is just a little over 1 so i could really identify with this post!

I am dying over here with the winter hat. What a sweetheart. It looks great with the outfit!!

  4. lol @ the winter hat. too cute. reminds me of my nephew and how he insists on wearing his red rain boots, even when there is no rain. he says they make him look like spiderman!

  5. DAH!!! I am definitely looking forward to this stage. When I saw the pic of her in the winter hat on instagram, I was ROFL!!! So cute – isn’t it funny how these little people have their own personalities? I love it!

That picture with the winter hat is the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen! That is one funny kiddo! Love your blog.

  9. How adorable! I’m also guilty of encouraging bad behavior;) I love that little table and its (cushioned)chairs, have you shared where it’s from? Rowan definitely looks like a big girl in these pictures, so cute!

  10. what a little lady she is becoming! its so darn cute!

  12. This is so much fun for meรขโ‚ฌยฆwith Levi doing so much of the same as Rowan. I LOVE this age. It has its challenges though, that is for sure! Enjoy it all, and hey–maybe time to have another!? (Don’t I sound like a grandma or something? sorry!)
    aloha

  13. by the way–I forgot to mention–I LOVE how Kevin cheers and hugs her, then “Now don’t ever do it again, ok?” hahahaha!

the winter hat photo is hilarious! she’s too cute

  15. “Don’t do this ever again!” ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s so funny to see her walking around with the hat on in full sun… exactly like my youngest daughter ( 2y)

  16. “You’re a big girl. Don’t do that ever again.” Hahaha – you two crack me up… scratch that you three!

  17. I can’t believe how some days it seems these kiddos change from one day to the next. I feel the same about my little guy. Its amazing and wonderful isn’t it?

I’m a new reader here and I gotta say, I love this blog. It’s super genuine and your family is so, so cute. All the best.

  19. I love this post! It makes me want to have babies!! I’m so torn between going and getting my masters or having babies! Congratulations on such a lovely family and good luck with the potty training!

    xx Adrian

  20. That video is the CUTEST. I can’t believe she’s using the potty. My just turned 2 year old refuses ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Lol my daughter is turning 2 in September and has recently discovered how to climb out of the crib as well about a month or 2 ago. So we had to take the front off and convert it to the toddler bed so she didn’t wind up hurting herself. She actually did really well so I hope Rowan does as well!

I haven’t even begun to think about potty training yet lol. She is so cute though!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I love seeing videos and photos of your baby girl. I remember you posted one, when she was so tiny, of her blowing raspberries and I couldn’t get over how cute she was and still is.

I kind of wish my son picked out his own clothes. I’m curious to see what he would choose. He has a few favorite shirts and he loves his sneakers over his sandals but it’s nothing like putting on a winter hat in the summertime!

  23. Haha this is SO cute. What a big girl! And I totally know what you mean about kids doing things they “shouldn’t” but they’re so cute you can’t stop. I’m a preschool teacher, and I get plenty of that! Sometimes it’s hard to correct behavior when you’re laughing hysterically because a child said “shit.”

  24. adorable fashion baby. love her sweet little girl lips. & your man has got some ARMS!

  25. haha! i love it.. i still don’t have Layla potty trained.. shes 2 1/2 almost. Madeline had just turned 3 when she didn’t need pull ups. Don’t stress it.. she’ll let you know when she’s ready ๐Ÿ™‚ i love the hat! now she needs to pair it with some rain boots and she’ll be all set.

Too cute!! My girl will be 2 in late August and her little brother will be arriving then as well ( same due date)
I love her little table & chairs + the seat covers. Where did you get the set?

Hi. My daughter was all about picking out her clothes from about 2. She is 9 now and although i miss the cute stylish outfits that she used to like( where is my comma?serious ly there isnt one on my kindle fire) Id like to think that she is her own fashionista way ahead of her time. Rowan is too cute btw

  28. Chelsea •

That video was awesome!! I laughed so hard! “now don’t do that again” bahaha!

  29. Ahhhh, that video is WAY TOO CUTE!! I love that she is wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs t-shirt too! She is so stinkin’ cute…oh my gosh. I love the photo of her sitting on the potty (?) the white seat…she’s going to be such a beautiful little girl!

What a great little post. I have a similar video of Anthony when he was little. Like “oh you shouldn’t be doing that but let me get the camera”

I love Kevs comment “now dont ever do that again” LOL!!! Hilarious.

Matteo came over to watch and I had to cover his eyes, lol. He did it once but he fell so I’m hoping he got scared enough that he won’t try it again for a WHILE! Although I am dreaming of a room for the brothers to share. Found some cute bunk bed ideas. LOL. I can wait though.

  31. Oh goodness I cannot believe how big she has gotten! What gorgeous, brave, and independent little miss!
