DIY Teepee!!!

teepee

Ever since I found out I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to make a teepee for Rowan. When I saw Brandy make one for Kingston a few months ago, it kinda kicked my butt into gear. I found a bunch of pictures on pinterest but ended up pretty much just making it as I went. I did use Rachel’s tutorial over on Smile and Wave as a good starting point. I would head over there if you are looking for a good tutorial. I followed it pretty closely except I made my fabric pieces smaller at the bottom by a few inches. I also added a few details to the front to make it special for Rowan’s room. I sewed some polka dot curtains and made a bunting flag to tie around the center of it. All in all, I think it came out pretty fantastic. Of course, I can see all the imperfections in the sewing and measuring, but Rowan doesn’t seem to mind:) It has become our special reading teepee. We spend lots of time in there through out the day and now, each night before bed, Kev, Rowan and I all lay down and read a bedtime story in the teepee. I strung some christmas tree lights up on the inside to make it a little more magical at night.

Are we friends on Twitter and facebook yet?

  1. this is awesome, Jen! My mom used to make and sell children’s tee-pees, they were the best to hang out and READ in! You did a beautiful job and I bet Rowan will have great memories of reading with her mom!

  2. Oh my gosh, that is so cute!!! I love it!! Great job!

  3. wow! this is so sweet and fun! we had an outdoor teepee when i was a kiddo and it was always such a special place for me to escape to!

  4. Oh my gosh – this would have been my dream come true as a kid. It is so cool!

  5. Im so sleeping in that!

  6. Yay! Jen, I don’t often comment, but read your blog daily. I am SO happy to see you featuring your DIY skills and your home design talents here again! I know it is tough now that you’re renting vs owing your home, but I really missed that side of your blog. Afterall, your bedroom birch tree mural is what got me hooked on JenLovesKev and I think of you whenever I sit in my own living room and stare at your sketch on my own wall… πŸ™‚

  7. This is AMAZING! Love it (especially as I was a huge bookworm growing up and now and would’ve loved a little space like that!).

  8. Even though I’m 31s, I kind of wish I had one of those in my room!

This is the sweetest little teepee. It looks adorable. I’m sure Rowan will enjoy her teepee for many years. You’ve inspired me to want to make one for my daughter even though my sewing skills are lacking.

  10. This is so cute! I don’t have children and I still want to build one! Maybe the pups would like it? haha

  12. This is so cute, I’m totally making one for my daughter!

  13. This is pretty awesome! I’ve been wanting to make my boy a tent for a long while. Every time we sit in his room to read I think that a tent would be a perfect reading spot. Great job!

  14. That is sooo amazing!! I can’t believe you made that yourself, I really want to make one now!x

  15. This is a little amazing, and by a little I mean A LOT!!! I really hope to be a mommy like you if I ever am with child! Excited for the room tour, it looks so cute from just the few photos I see!

  16. Mistakes or flaws?, I don’t see nothing I only see and amazing teepee, with gorgeous fabric colors, beatufil details. That make Rowan’s room so unique and fun.

I could sleep hours in that comfy teepee.

  17. Oh my goodness I am totally stealing this when/if I have kids! haha That’s really awesome!

  27. ah, i love this! we made jess a tent, but it wasn’t durable enough to withstand her brothers. after our move we’re going to try a tee pee πŸ˜‰ and maybe keep it in her room!

  28. This is gorgeous! I always wanted a teepee in my living room for my two dogs – much nicer to look at than the ugly trampoline bed that takes up half the room!

  29. This is beyond adorable and I’m totally taking note for the day I have a little one and can make a teepee for their room! PS: Love the little cheetah addition!

  30. This is so awesome – you have inspired me to make a teepee for my own little lady. I had a teepee growing up (albeit not hand-made with love) and loved hanging out in it. I think it had Sesame Street characters on the side.

  31. Oh how perfect!

  32. That is seriously the cutest thing ever, Jen! It’s awesome…can you make one for someone who is say, 5’3″? πŸ™‚

  33. At first, I thought you were saying that you were pregnant, again, and I was like “WHAH?! Woo hoo!”…then I reread and realized you meant pregnant with Rowan πŸ˜‰ I have wanted to make a big tee-pee reading nook for my little one, too. I am hoping to make one by the end of the month with the hubs. Hoping to put a little DIY chandelier up on the inside, like Dottie Angel’s: http://dottieangel.blogspot.com/2011/12/on-12th-day-of-joyfulness.html

  34. Absolutely adorable. She is going to have such great memories of playing in there!

  35. This is the sweetest thing ever!! What a lucky girl!

  47. Chandra •

I think my daughter could use something like this, a closed off reading nook where she cant see any of the distractions (like computers), but I think a teepee is too childish (but ADORABLE!) for her, what do you suggested?

And Rowan is the cutest baby ever!

  48. Ashley •

How many poles did you use? 5 or 6? and how sturdy is it?

  49. Hi , I love it and wanna make my little boys. How many poles did you use ? I counted 7 πŸ™‚ and how much fabric you used for around the poles.? That kind of helps I think to guess how wide that poles should be? Thanks for time and ideas for sharing with us.Nesim

  50. I love this teepee, I had one when I was a little girl. I would love to make one like this for my daughter. Would you by chance have a pattern that I could use to make one? Also, how tall is it?

  51. Would you by chance be willing to make one? I love this but font think i could ever pull this cute thing off, not so crafty πŸ˜‰

  52. Catherine •

Would you be willing to make and sell me one?

  53. […] Este estÑ hecho por los padres de la criatura, me parece divino (Imagen) […]

  61. I can only find 4ft dowels….is that what you used??

  62. Thank you for this beautiful design. I want one for myself! I’ve pinned it.

  63. Lovely! The pics are just adorable. and the idea – worth sharing.

  64. Nonette Robinson •

Can you please tell me where you found your wooden poles? I have looked at no less than 25 places and no one carries them that long. Looked at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Micheal’s, Jo Ann’s Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, several lumber yards and on and on.

  65. Love this, and it can grow with your child!

  66. Vanessa •

    Hi there,

Love your teepee, but I am also looking to downsize the one from Smile and Wave. Can you tell me the dimensions you made yours? Thanks,

    Shannon

  77. Wow, this is nearly exactly how I drew up the teepee I’m making my kids for Christmas. I haven’t seen a plan or tutorial yet for one quite like this, but this is it! I absolutely love your teepee. I like the one on http://racheldenbow.blogspot.com/2010/01/teepee.html as well, but it looks a little wide for the space we have. Do you happen to have the dimensions of your panels? I’d love to see how you did it! Amazing. Mind if I share a link to yours on my blog? Let me know! Thank you, Erin

  78. I know this is an older post, but could you tell me how far apart the sticks were for your teepee? The tutorial link ones seem a little further apart, but it could just be the picture. Your spacing looks perfect! Thanks and happy holidays!

Help me! I’m trying to make yours…looking around at other diy sites, they are so confusing! So, it doesn’t look like you made pockets for the pipes to go through? How did you secure the fabric??? Your teepee is my favorite that I’ve seen in all my searching πŸ™‚ Happy mother’s day!

  80. Loved all the colors you used so cute. πŸ™‚
Do you have a pattern by any chance? I love it.>3
